The purpose of making pool upgrades is to make it more enjoyable to use, easier to maintain and more energy efficient. While it’s always good to plan pool upgrades during the down seasons, many pool owners find themselves wanting to do it when the weather becomes warmer.
Here are the top 3 smart upgrades to consider:
3 SMART POOL UPGRADES FOR 2025

VARIABLE SPEED PUMP
It's time to cut your electric bill in half!
The National Renewable Energy
Laboratory confirms that variable speed pumps are significantly more energy efficient than single speed pumps
The pump of the filtration system is where most of the energy is used. You can save energy and maintain a comfortable swimming pool temperature by installing a smaller, higher efficiency pump and by operating it less. On average, an energy efficient pump will use 30-45% less energy than that of a standard pump. The difference over a season can be immense.
When shopping for a new pool pump, it’s important to consider energy savings. ENERGY STAR® certified pool pumps, like the Pentair IntelliFlo® VSF Variable Speed and Flow Pump, save energy by adjusting the speed or flow rate for the task at hand. This provides you with the ultimate system performance, crystal clear water and the highest energy savings available.

SALT CHLORINE GENERATOR
Salt water pools reduce skin and eye irritation and greatly reduce the chlorine smell.
Many people are choosing to remodel their swimming pools by making a saltwater conversion for the many advantages that a saltwater pool provides.
IntelliChlor uses common table salt to produce all the chlorine a pool needs, safely, effectively and automatically. It provides the same sanitation performance as harsh chlorine additives without the drawbacks. With a saltwater pool system, a chlorine generator is added to the pool’s filtration system. The water circulates through the chlorinator, where salt produces a chlorine gas that dissolves into the water. That chlorine in turn, breaks down and turns into salt, cycling the process all over again.
Salt also is softer on the skin that traditional chlorine and swimmers tend to have reduced red eyes, itchy skin and discolored hair. Saltwater systems can also be used with a small hot tub or a larger backyard pool.

POOL & SPA AUTOMATION
Today’s newest smart control systems can be fully integrated with your mobile device, so you’re always in control.
Swimming pool automation control systems afford the double benefit of being more convenient while also cutting down on energy.
Once construction is completed, the benefits of automation become even more apparent. Remote access and automatic reporting make it easier than ever for a technician to diagnose a problem — and sometimes even fix it remotely. Thus, an increasing number of builders are making these products standard on all new installations, knowing that, down the road, the time and money they save will more than make up for the initial cost.
Automation systems empower pool owners with full control of their pool ecosystem from pool pumps, heating products, sanitizing, water chemistry, water features and lighting - with convenient mobile device control from anywhere in the world with the push of a button.

What You Should Know About Swimming Pool Algae

GREEN POOL RESCUE
A green pool is an eyesore and it’s a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other nasty bacteria that pose a risk to your health and safety. Pool algae is an obnoxious and often debilitating problem that leaves you with a pool that is underutilized.
Algae spores are continually brought into the pool through wind, rain, contaminated equipment, and even contaminated swimwear. When conditions are right, an algae bloom can occur within a matter of hours. A lack of good circulation, filtration, and sanitation are usually contributing or primary causes of pool algae.
Shocking” your pool is a vital component of maintaining a healthy swimming environment. The term, "Shocking” refers to the process of adding chlorine or non-chlorine chemicals to your pool in order to raise the "free chlorine” level to a point where contaminates such as algae, combined chlorine (also known as chloramines) and bacteria are destroyed.
The goal of shocking your pool is to raise the free chlorine level of your pool water to roughly 10 times the combined chlorine level of your pool water. By reaching this mark which is commonly referred to as "break point chlorination,” free chlorine is able to eliminate contaminates and protect the health of your pool.
It's very important that you let a professional handle this for you unless you have prior experience.

Salt chlorine generators are the best way to prevent algae in your pool. They produce a consistent feed of natural chlorine into your pool all the time. They will also allow you as a pool owner to leave for a few days without being too vigilant of your pool, but still come back to a crystal-clear, algae-free body of water.

Is Salt Water Pool Healthier for Us?
A salt water pool is more than just a relaxing place to take a dip. Salt water pools also offer numerous health benefits that range from soothing your skin to decreasing your stress levels.
SALT WATER IS GOOD FOR THE SKIN
Chlorine can leave our skin dry and itchy after a swim. Alternatively, salt water is actually good for the skin. It can leave your skin feeling smoother and softer, and studies have been done that prove how salt water can help with skin disorders like eczema, acne, and psoriasis. Saltwater also acts as a natural moisturizer and exfoliator, increasing our skin’s ability to retain moisture.

SALT WATER HAS ANTI-STRESS PROPERTIES
The more stressed we are, the less our bodies are able to function properly. Salt water helps promote our body’s natural relaxation process leaving us feeling refreshed after each swim.

SWIMMING IN SALT WATER POOL IS A GREAT WORKOUT
Exercise is important to our overall health. Swimming is a great workout because you’re resisting the flow of the water with every stroke, making your body work harder than it would if you were simply exercising using gym equipment, like a treadmill or elliptical machine. Water is about 800 times denser than air, so it provides about 12 times more resistance. A salt water pool allows us to work out in a more relaxed setting than that offered by a traditional gym. Swimming in a salt water pool also helps you concentrate on your breathing (you don’t have a choice, you can’t breathe underwater), which is something we tend to forget to do when we’re trying to burn calories at the gym.

SALT WATER MAY HELP REDUCE INFLAMMATION OF JOINTS
Swimming in a salt water pool is better on the joints and muscles than a traditional chlorinated pool. Salt water contains bromide, a mineral that helps relieve the everyday aches, pains, and soreness we all feel deep within our joints and muscles. Furthermore, people who are recovering from an injury will find it easier to move within a salt water pool as the bromide helps their muscles and joints recover.

SALT WATER IS GENTLER ON EYES
Some people are sensitive to chlorine and have trouble breathing when they’re swimming in an over-chlorinated pool. Also, chlorine can make your eyes red and irritated from the chemicals within. However, salt water pools won’t leave your eyes red and your lungs irritated.

Although the initial cost to convert your pool to salt water can be expensive, it could prove to be more cost-efficient over time. Salt water generators use chemical electrolysis to minimize chlorine in the pool, and while those generators require a higher up-front cost, they can be more cost efficient than constantly buying chemicals over the years.

Why is Filter Cleaning So Important?
Your swimming pool or spa is essentially a large basin of water that is consistently exposed to a variety of contaminants, which can include dirt, insects, body oils, sun tan lotion, skin flake, sweat, as well as finer particles like germs and bacteria.
The filter cartridges are the backbone of the water-cleaning system. The filter not only traps and and removes all these contaminants from the water, it also helps with the even distribution of chemicals that are crucial to keep your pool clean and healthy.
Without regular cleaning, the water filter in your pool will clog just like the air filter on a vacuum cleaner, and simply not work as well. When a filter is overloaded with debris and oils, the water flow is compromised. If the system works harder, the energy bill is higher. Additionally, the system is stressed more than necessary when a filter is dirty, which cuts down on overall system lifespan.

At The Pump Master Pool & Spa, we recommend getting it done routinely every 6 months. There are two ideal times to do this — in the spring after the pollen has fallen (which usually proceeds the hot weather ideal for swimming) and once your pool season ends (typically late fall). You can get the most bang for your buck by having them cleaned at these times.
Unless you’re extremely handy with at home DIY, you’ll want a professional to help you with this laborious task. Call The Pump Master Pool & Spa at (925) 579-1414 or email us at info@thepumpmaster.com. We will not only thoroughly clean your filter cartridges on a regular basis, but also inspect your filtration system to make sure that it is functioning efficiently as it should.
